Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a common condition in which the major blood vessel (aorta) in the abdomen dilates like a balloon. The vast majority of patients have no symptoms. Over time the aneurysm may expand and may burst. It is to be hoped that when the national ultrasound screening programme is rolled out, we will identify a large number of patients with very early disease who can be safely treated before problems develop.

The project has been investigating the early features of abdominal aortic aneurysm, the proteins that cause weakening of the wall the aorta and the genes of those proteins. It has provided us with information about the cause of aneurysms and will help identify relatives at risk of developing the condition, besides helping develop new drug treatments to stop aneurysms growing.

We now have one of the world's largest collections of samples with regard to the development of aneurysms, and a wealth of expertise as demonstrated by our scientific successes.
